Planning a family vacation sounds exciting... until everyone has a different idea of what the perfect vacation should look like!

The little ones want pools and character meet-and-greets. The teenagers want adventure, independence, and Wi-Fi. And the adults? Sometimes we just want five minutes to relax with a tropical drink!

Here's the good news: A memorable family vacation doesn't have to mean pleasing everyone every single minute.

Whether you're dreaming of a magical Disney getaway, a fun-filled family cruise, or a tropical all-inclusive resort, a little thoughtful planning can make all the difference.

Here are my seven favorite tips for planning a family vacation that everyone will actually enjoy!

Family vacations are all about laughter, adventure, and making unforgettable memories together!

1. Family Vacation Planning Tips: Choose a Destination Everyone Will Love!

The secret to an unforgettable family vacation? Finding a destination that makes everyone excited to go!

Maybe your little ones are dreaming of meeting their favorite Disney characters, your teenagers want thrilling adventures, and the adults are hoping for some much-needed relaxation.

The good news? You don't necessarily have to choose!

Family-friendly cruises offer entertainment and activities for different ages. All-inclusive resorts can combine beautiful beaches, exciting pools, and kids' clubs. And destinations like Walt Disney World offer magical experiences for the whole family!

The key is choosing a vacation that fits your family's interests, energy levels, and travel style.

My travel tip: Before choosing a destination, ask everyone what ONE thing would make their vacation amazing. You might be surprised by the answers, and it will help you find the perfect fit!

2. Consider the Ages of Your Children!

A vacation that's perfect for a five-year-old might not be nearly as exciting for a fifteen-year-old!

When planning a family getaway, it's important to think about what each age group will enjoy.

Toddlers and preschoolers: Look for splash pads, shallow pools, playgrounds, character experiences, and plenty of opportunities for naps and downtime.

Elementary-age kids: Water parks, hands-on activities, kids' clubs, wildlife experiences, and exciting excursions can make a vacation unforgettable.

Tweens and teenagers: Adventure activities, teen clubs, sports, entertainment, and opportunities for age-appropriate independence can make a big difference.

And don't forget the adults! You deserve to enjoy your vacation, too!

My travel tip: Before booking a resort or cruise, check the age requirements for kids' clubs, activities, and excursions. Just because something is advertised as family-friendly doesn't mean every activity is available to every age group!

3. Don't Overpack Your Itinerary!

I know how tempting it is to squeeze every attraction, excursion, and activity into one vacation. After all, you want to experience EVERYTHING!

But here's a little secret: Sometimes less really is more.

Trying to fit too much into each day can leave everyone exhausted, cranky, and in need of another vacation when they get home! 😂

Build some downtime into your schedule. Leave room for afternoon swims, lazy mornings, spontaneous adventures, and those unexpected moments that turn into your favorite memories.

And if you're visiting a theme park, consider scheduling a slower day between your busiest park days. Your feet (and your family!) will thank you!

My travel tip: Plan one or two must-do activities each day and leave the rest flexible. It's much easier to add something fun when everyone has energy than to push through an exhausting schedule!

4. Choose Accommodations That Make Family Travel Easier!

Let's talk about something that can make or break a family vacation: where you're staying!

A gorgeous resort or hotel might look amazing in photos, but if everyone is squeezed into one tiny room with nowhere to spread out, things can get interesting REALLY fast!

When traveling with children, a little extra space and convenience can make your vacation so much more enjoyable.

Depending on your family's needs, look for:

  • Family suites or connecting rooms: Extra space and privacy can make a huge difference.

  • Kid-friendly pools and splash areas: Perfect for keeping younger travelers entertained.

  • Kids' clubs and teen activities: Give children opportunities for age-appropriate fun while adults enjoy some downtime.

  • Convenient locations: Being close to attractions, restaurants, or the beach can save valuable vacation time.

  • Family-friendly dining options: Flexible menus and convenient meal choices can make everyone's day easier.

And if you're taking a cruise, choosing the right cabin location and configuration is just as important!

My travel tip: Don't book accommodations based on pretty pictures alone! Check room occupancy limits, bed configurations, kids' club age requirements, and what's actually included. The right setup can make your family vacation so much more comfortable!

5. Look Beyond the Price Tag!

We all love finding a great vacation deal! But sometimes that amazing price you see advertised isn't quite the bargain it appears to be.

A hotel might have a lower nightly rate, but what happens when you add meals, transportation, resort fees, activities, and all those little extras?

Suddenly, that budget-friendly vacation might not be so budget-friendly anymore! 😂

That's why I always encourage families to look at the total vacation experience, not just

the starting price.

For example, an all-inclusive resort might cost more upfront but include meals, drinks, and activities that you'd otherwise pay for separately.

A cruise may offer accommodations, included dining, entertainment, and transportation between destinations in one vacation package.

And when planning a Disney vacation, understanding ticket options, transportation, dining, and resort benefits can make a big difference in your overall budget.

The goal isn't necessarily to book the cheapest vacation. It's to find the one that offers the best value for YOUR family!

My travel tip: Before booking, make a list of everything your family wants to experience and compare the total cost, including taxes, fees, meals, transportation, and activities. Sometimes spending a little more upfront can save money—and stress—later!

6. Let Everyone Have a Say!

Here's a little secret to planning a family vacation that everyone will actually enjoy: Give everyone a voice in the planning!

You might be surprised by what matters most to each person.

Maybe your youngest wants to spend an entire afternoon at the pool, your teenager is dreaming of zip-lining through the jungle, and someone else just wants to enjoy a delicious meal together.

Let each family member choose one special activity or experience they'd love to have during the trip.

It doesn't have to be expensive or elaborate. Sometimes the simplest experiences become the most meaningful memories.

And when everyone has something to look forward to, the entire vacation becomes more exciting!

My travel tip: Before your trip, have a family vacation planning night! Let everyone share their top three things they'd love to do, then work together to choose a few favorites that fit your schedule and budget. It's a fun way to build excitement before you even leave home!

7. Focus on Memories, Not Perfection!

Here's something I always want families to remember: The perfect vacation doesn't have to be perfect!

Maybe it rains during your beach day, someone gets a little cranky, or your carefully planned schedule goes completely out the window.

And guess what? That's okay!

Years from now, your family probably won't remember every restaurant you ate at or whether everything went exactly according to plan.

They'll remember the laughter, the adventures, the silly moments, and the time you spent together.

So take the pictures, try something new, embrace the unexpected, and don't forget to enjoy the journey!

Because at the end of the day, the best family vacations aren't about doing everything. They're about being together and creating stories you'll tell for years to come.

My travel tip: Put the camera down every once in a while and soak in the moment. The photos are wonderful, but being fully present for those special memories is even better!
